- Measure the chest. Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your dog's ribcage, just behind the front legs, and add about two fingers of slack.
- Loosen all straps first. It is much easier to put a loose harness on and tighten it than to wrestle a tight one over your dog's head.
- Check the two-finger rule. You should be able to slide two fingers flat under every strap — snug, not tight.
- Watch the first walk. Look for rubbing at the armpits or slipping at the shoulders and adjust once more when you get home.
