How to Tire Out a High-Energy Dog Indoors

Rain, illness, a sprained paw, fireworks, a heatwave, a small flat: sooner or later you will need to wear out a busy dog without leaving the house. The good news is that thinking tires a dog faster than trotting does.

Start with the nose

Scent work is the highest-value, lowest-space activity there is. Scatter half your dog's dinner across a towel or a snuffle mat. Hide five treats around one room while your dog waits behind a door, then release them with a cue. Ten minutes of searching will settle a dog more thoroughly than a half-hour walk.

Chewing counts as exercise

Sustained chewing lowers arousal. A stuffed and frozen rubber toy, a large carrot, or a long-lasting chew gives twenty quiet minutes and works especially well in the late afternoon when many dogs get restless.

Add movement without space

An automatic rolling ball toy is genuinely useful indoors: it starts, stops and changes direction on its own, so your dog gets short bursts of chase in a hallway without you throwing anything at the television. Use it in five-minute bursts, on carpet or a rug rather than slippery laminate, and switch it off between rounds so it stays interesting.

Train something small

Two or three minutes of new tricks is mentally exhausting in the best way. Spin, paw targeting, "go to bed", walking backwards, or a hand touch. Keep sessions short, use tiny treats, and finish while your dog is still keen.

Build a five-minute obstacle course

A broom over two books to step over, a blanket draped on chairs to walk under, a cushion to stand on with two paws. Slow, deliberate movement builds body awareness and burns real energy. Keep it low: no jumping for puppies or big breeds still growing.

Practise doing nothing

Many "high-energy" dogs are actually dogs who have never learned to switch off. Reward calm on a mat with a scattering of treats every time you notice it, without a word. This is a skill, and it is the one that makes the biggest difference at home.

Do not forget water and kit

Indoor games still raise body temperature. Keep water down, and if you finish with a short toilet trip, a breathable mesh harness with lead and a portable water bottle mean you are out and back in five minutes.

A sample rainy-day plan

Morning: scatter breakfast. Midday: five minutes of trick training, then a chew. Afternoon: rolling ball bursts and a hunt for hidden treats. Evening: settle practice on the mat. Most owners are surprised how little walking a dog misses when the day is structured like this.
