Reflective vs Light-Up: What Makes a Pet Visible at Night

Reflective and light-up gear are not two versions of the same thing. One waits to be lit; the other announces itself. Understanding the difference is the whole point of buying either.

How reflective material works

Retroreflective fabric bounces light straight back at its source. That makes it superb when a car's headlights are aimed at your dog, and completely invisible when they are not. On an unlit lane, a driver rounding a bend may only get reflection in the final second or two — and cyclists, joggers and other dog walkers often have no light source at all.

How active lights work

An LED emits its own light, so your dog is visible from every direction, at every angle, whether or not anyone is pointing anything at them. That is the difference between being seen when it is already too late and being seen from a hundred metres away.

Steady or flashing?

A steady light is easier for a driver to judge distance and speed by. A flashing light catches the eye faster but makes movement harder to read. A reasonable compromise is steady on roads and pavements, flashing in open fields where you are mostly tracking your own dog. Avoid very fast strobes.

Colour and position

Cooler colours — white, green, blue — read as brighter to the human eye at low light levels than red or orange. Position matters as much as colour: a light on the neck sits at roughly headlight height for medium and large dogs. For a small dog, add a second light on the harness or the lead so it is not lost behind grass.

Which product for which walk
